Family counseling is used when families have difficulties getting along and with severed or strained relationships. Typically, family sessions occur when there is a child getting counseling services; it's part of the child's treatment to have parent or family sessions. This is necessary to help the child’s overall improvement. Otherwise there's a risk of the child improving in session but going back into the same environment and slipping back into prior patterns. Parents generally want to be involved and will be provided a general overview of what's being worked on and how they can help. The child does have confidentiality and every detail from a child's session will not be shared with the parent.
